Here at digitalLIFT, we are continually inspired by the dedication and passion of our volunteers. This month, we’re thrilled to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Anthony Malakai Matricia, a Digital Coach whose commitment has made a profound impact on the learners he serves.
A Mission-Driven Start
Anthony first joined the digitalLIFT team as a Digital Coach Volunteer in November 2023, and he’s been an invaluable asset for nearly two and a half years.
“I first connected with digitalLIFT while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in computer science,” Anthony shares. “I felt strongly aligned with digitalLIFT’s mission to empower others by promoting digital literacy. I decided to reach out and express my interest.”
Anthony’s background and passion for technology quickly led him to become a dedicated coach. Even after graduating with his bachelor’s degree in 2024 and starting a full-time role as an Analyst for the State of Hawaii while pursuing a master’s in computer science, he has remained committed to our mission. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to continue volunteering as a Digital Coach and contribute to digitalLIFT’s mission,” he says.
From Webinars to One-on-One Connections
Anthony has worked on several projects, all focused on promoting digital literacy among seniors. His projects have ranged from tackling complex, timely topics to providing personalized support.
“The first major project I led was a webinar in 2023 discussing how to detect AI-generated content,” Anthony explains. “I hosted a presentation explaining how artificial intelligence can be used to create misleading information online, and I also discussed ways to carefully analyze text, images, and videos alike.”
While larger projects are important, Anthony’s favorite way to volunteer is through personal interaction.
“Of all the projects I have been involved in, I have most enjoyed the one-on-one tutoring sessions. These sessions allowed me to build a personal connection with learners and help them build confidence with technology. Not only is it a rewarding feeling to help others learn digital literacy, but it is also enjoyable to spend quality time with learners who share my same passion for technology.”
A Lasting Impression: The Story of William Marotta
When asked to share a memorable experience, Anthony immediately recalls a learner named William Marotta.
“One learner who made a lasting impression on me is William Marotta. I have worked with William consistently for over 2 years, and from the very beginning, he approached every session with genuine curiosity and an eagerness to learn.”
Over the past two years, Anthony and William have covered a vast curriculum, turning complex digital tasks into second nature. Topics have included everything from navigating smart devices and organizing emails to participating in video calls, scheduling events in Google Calendar, using translation tools, and managing online storage.
“Seeing his skills and confidence grow has been inspiring, and I admire his dedication to lifelong learning,” Anthony says. “Even as the coach, I have learned many valuable lessons from William, and I strive to follow the same commitment to lifelong learning that he has.”
Advice for Aspiring Digital Literacy Volunteers
For those considering giving their time, Anthony highly recommends the experience. His key advice focuses on two simple but powerful principles: patience and connection.
“My advice is to be patient and be kind. It can be tempting to jump straight into lessons and cover lots of different topics at a fast pace, but for many learners this can make the learning process seem overwhelming. Moving at a calm, steady pace allows learners to better understand and retain the material.”
He emphasizes that the role is about more than just technical instruction. “It is important to build a connection with learners. As volunteers, we are not just teaching digital literacy, we are also providing companionship and spending quality time with others. I always start my sessions by catching up, talking story, and checking in on how things are going. Building meaningful connections is just as important as teaching digital literacy.”—–Thank you, Anthony, for your exceptional service to digitalLIFT!
