Public libraries have long been trusted community anchors. Today, they are also on the frontlines of closing the digital divide. In a world where digital access and skills are essential for education, employment, healthcare, and civic participation, libraries play a critical role in ensuring no one is left behind.
For more than a decade, digitalLIFT has partnered with libraries across the country to expand access, build staff capacity, and deliver sustainable digital literacy programs. These collaborations show what’s possible when libraries are equipped not just with technology but also the tools and training to help people use tech with confidence.
Expanding Access Through Inclusive, Community-Based Programs
In communities where language and access barriers exist, libraries are uniquely positioned to meet people where they are.
At the Milpitas Library, part of the Santa Clara County Library system, digitalLIFT supported bilingual, one-on-one digital literacy tutoring tailored to a diverse population. Many participants were navigating technology for the first time and learning essential skills, such as setting up email accounts and applying for jobs online. High demand and repeat participation reflected the program’s lasting impact.
Through its partnership with Solano County Library, digitalLIFT has brought classes directly to smaller and more remote branches, including Rio Vista and Springstowne. This approach ensures that residents, especially older adults and those with limited transportation, can access training close to home, expanding opportunity across the county.
Supporting Older Adults with Skills and Confidence
While access is one barrier, age can be another, especially for older adults navigating an increasingly digital world.
At the Sunset Branch of the San Francisco Public Library, digitalLIFT partnered to launch Sunset Tech Connect, a program designed to help monolingual seniors build confidence with technology. Through small-group classes focused on tablet use, email, online safety, and apps, participants developed both skills and meaningful social connections.
In Texas, digitalLIFT worked with the Round Rock Public Library to expand similar programming through remote instruction. Librarians were trained to lead classes for residents of the Round Rock Housing Authority using an iPad-adapted curriculum and bilingual materials. With comprehensive train-the-trainer support, the library is now equipped to sustain and grow the program.
Building Staff Capacity for Long-Term Impact
Sustainable digital inclusion starts with equipping library staff.
In upstate New York, digitalLIFT partnered with the Capital District Library Council to deliver customized training sessions that helped librarians better understand the challenges faced by patrons with low digital literacy. Staff gained practical tools to teach essential skills and guide users toward affordable internet options.
Similarly, at the South Brunswick Public Library in New Jersey, librarians completed a self-paced Train-the-Trainer program to build confidence in teaching tablet basics and supporting beginner learners. With updated curriculum, training videos, and ongoing support, the library launched a program that continues to empower both staff and patrons.
Empowering Youth as Digital Leaders
Libraries are also powerful spaces for developing the next generation of digital leaders.
At the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch, digitalLIFT trained youth volunteers as digital navigators, enabling them to assist patrons with everyday technology needs. In just a few weeks, these young leaders supported hundreds of community members.
This model builds on earlier work with the Oakland Public Library through the Ready, Set, Connect! program. There, more than 100 youth volunteers helped over 6,000 patrons across multiple languages, demonstrating the scale and impact of youth-led digital inclusion.
Expanding Digital Equity Across Texas
digitalLIFT’s current work in Texas reflects a commitment to locally rooted, relationship-driven programming.
Through a partnership with Methodist Healthcare Ministries, digitalLIFT is collaborating with libraries in San Antonio, Jarrell, and Martindale to deliver structured digital literacy programs.
- At the San Antonio Public Library, patrons receive support with digital skills, devices, and access to essential online services.
- At the Jarrell Community Library and Resource Center, a partnership with the Next Steps Transition Center has transformed informal visits into structured, impactful learning experiences.
- At the Martindale Community Library, digitalLIFT is helping bring consistent digital inclusion programming to a rural community where access gaps are significant.
Together, these efforts show how tailored community-centered approaches can expand opportunity across diverse regions.
What This Means for Digital Equity
From multilingual tutoring in California to rural programming in Texas, one thing is clear: libraries are not merely access points. Rather, they are engines of digital opportunity when paired with the right support.
These partnerships achieve several objectives:
- Expand access to devices and connectivity
- Deliver skills training in multiple languages
- Support learners of all ages, from youth to older adults
- Build local capacity through staff and volunteers
- Strengthen community trust and resilience
Looking Ahead
As digital needs continue to evolve, from remote work tools to online health services, libraries and their partners will remain essential.
Access alone is not enough.
Without skills, support, and human connection, technology remains out of reach. Libraries, supported by partners like digitalLIFT, are helping communities not just get online, but thrive online.
