Digital skills aren’t just about knowing which buttons to click. For many learners, they’re about confidence — confidence to try, to recover from mistakes, and to keep learning as technology changes. That confidence and ability to adapt is what we mean by digital resilience: the awareness, skills, and mindset needed to navigate an ever-shifting digital landscape.
For people doing the work of digital inclusion — educators, navigators, librarians, trainers, and informal helpers — building digital resilience matters just as much as teaching specific tools. Stress, fear, and past experiences shape how learners show up to technology. When those factors go unacknowledged, even the best-designed lesson can fall flat.
Below are five common things we hear from learners all the time about technology, along with practical reframes that can help move fear or resistance toward comfort and confidence.
1. Acknowledge Feelings
“I’m afraid to even click on anything.”
Technology can feel high-stakes, especially for learners who have been burned by past mistakes or told they “should already know this.” Fear of breaking something, losing information, or doing it “wrong” often shows up before learning even begins.
The reframe: Fear isn’t a failure — it’s information. It’s your brain trying to keep you safe from some bad outcome, whether that’s getting your email hacked or just feeling embarrassed for making a mistake. Naming and normalizing those feelings helps create a learning environment where it’s safe to be unsure, ask questions, and start again.
2. Build on What Learners Already Know
“I don’t know anything about technology…”
Many learners underestimate what they already know because their skills don’t feel “official” or technical enough. This belief can shut down curiosity before it has a chance to grow.
The reframe: Learners already have relevant experience. Texting, searching, scrolling, and tapping all involve transferable skills. And even if learners don’t have hands-on experience with the tech yet, they’ve absorbed impressions and ideas from the media and community about what to expect, plus a wealth of prior experience with other non-digital systems (files and folders, anyone?). Connecting new tools to familiar concepts helps learners see that they’re not starting from zero — they’re building on top of a strong foundation
3. Highlight Patterns, Not Just Steps
“Every time I think I’m getting the hang of something, there’s an update and I have to start over.”
New platforms, or even scheduled updates to a familiar tool like a smartphone, can feel overwhelming when learners think they have to memorize every single step. This rote memorization approach also makes learning more fragile if even one step along the way changes unexpectedly.
The reframe: Technology is full of patterns. Icons, menus, settings, and layouts repeat across tools – that’s part of what we mean when we describe a digital space as “intuitive.” Rather than teaching exact steps, helping learners notice and interpret these similarities builds a sense of control and makes new technology feel more predictable and less intimidating.
4. Make Room for Safe Experimentation
“I don’t want to mess anything up.”
Fear of making mistakes often keeps learners from trying at all. When the consequences feel unclear or irreversible, hesitation makes sense – after all, we’ve been very diligent in teaching people that the internet can be a dangerous place! And when the cost of a mistake might be losing precious irreplaceable files or having to find the money for a new device, it’s no wonder learners are cautious.
The reframe: Within safe limits, mistakes are not just okay, they’re one of the most effective ways that our brains learn to make sense of new tools and spaces. Creating low-stakes opportunities to explore, where nothing important can be broken, helps learners overcome their hesitation, practice digital problem-solving, and recover confidently when things don’t go as planned.
5. Normalize Ongoing Learning
“I’ll never be able to keep up with all these changes.”
Technology’s constant evolution can leave learners feeling perpetually behind, no matter how much progress they’ve made.
The reframe: No one ever “finishes” learning technology, and nobody knows everything – nor do they need to! As comparative experts, we can make technology learning more approachable by modeling curiosity and flexibility, and by being willing to not just admit when we don’t know something but actually demonstrate our own research and exploration process. This shows learners that staying engaged and curious matters more than knowing everything, and that they can pick and choose what learning they want to prioritize.
Putting It into Practice
For educators, this might mean designing lessons that center confidence alongside skill-building. For digital navigators, it can look like responding calmly when something unexpected happens. For informal helpers, it may be as simple as reminding someone that frustration is normal — and temporary.
Digital resilience isn’t only something learners need. It’s something all of us rely on as technology keeps changing. By acknowledging emotions, building on strengths, and creating space to experiment, we help learners — and ourselves — approach technology with greater confidence and trust.
