The digital divide – the gap in access to and proficiency with digital technologies – remains a pressing challenge in today’s world. For many older adults, barriers such as limited access to technology, lack of confidence, and minimal social support make it difficult to adopt and sustain digital skills. While access and training are important first steps, true digital inclusion requires more: long-term engagement, practical applications, and ongoing support.
Why Ongoing Support Matters
Research shows that many learners lose confidence or struggle to retain digital skills after completing a training program. In a 2023 report, we found that 37% of our learners struggled to sustain or further develop their skills post-training, with some even experiencing a decline. Limited opportunities for practice, language barriers, and insufficient support resources often contribute to these challenges.
Recognizing this, we expanded our tech advice sessions to offer ongoing, multilingual assistance. These sessions provide learners with practical guidance, real-time troubleshooting, and the encouragement needed to keep building confidence and independence.
The Impact of Tech Advice Sessions
digitalLIFT’s report also highlighted the benefits of sustained digital support. Using surveys and focus groups, our research explored how tech advice sessions affect older adults’ digital engagement, social well-being, and confidence.
The findings are encouraging:
- Increased Internet Use: Participants in tech advice sessions reported more than twice the rate of near-constant internet use compared to those who completed only initial training (34.3% v. 16.6%).
- Reduced Loneliness: 68.6% of participants reported a significant decrease in feelings of loneliness and isolation after joining ongoing support sessions.
- Stronger Social Connections: 40% of learners used digital communication tools to connect with friends and family, fostering stronger relationships.
- Confidence and Leadership: 54% of participants strongly agreed they felt confident enough to support others in learning digital skills – demonstrating not only self-efficacy but also a ripple effect within their communities!
These results suggest that ongoing tech support does far more than teach technology; it helps learners build community, increase social inclusion, and embrace lifelong learning.
Toward Sustainable Digital Inclusion
Sustainable digital inclusion is about more than providing devices or one-time training. It requires addressing affordability, accessibility, and cultural factors while offering learners the encouragement and opportunities they need to keep growing.
Ongoing support empowers older adults to stay connected with loved ones, access essential services, and continue exploring the digital world with confidence. It also encourages them to share their knowledge, creating a cycle of learning and support that strengthens entire communities.
As this research underscores, digital inclusion efforts should go beyond access and initial training. By embedding ongoing support into programs and policies, governments, nonprofits, and community groups can ensure older adults thrive in our increasingly digital society.
At digitalLIFT, we believe that digital inclusion doesn’t end after one class – it grows through consistent connection and continued support. Partner with us and help expand access to ongoing tech guidance that empowers older adults to stay confident, connected, and independent.
