At digitalLIFT, we believe understanding the digital divide starts with empathy, and there’s no better way to build that understanding than by walking in someone else’s shoes. This month’s webinar, MHM Digital Divide Simulation: What We Discovered and Why It Matters, brings together key organizers and partners to unpack the event’s outcomes and share valuable lessons learned. Speakers from San Antonio Digital Connects, the Family Service Association, and digitalLIFT will highlight major takeaways for Texas and beyond.

A Closer Look at Digital Exclusion
Across the U.S., millions of people remain disconnected from reliable internet, affordable devices, or the basic digital skills needed to navigate modern life. Many adults struggle to complete essential online tasks due to digital access and skills gaps. These barriers aren’t just technical: they’re social, economic, and emotional.
The MHM Digital Divide Simulation, held in San Antonio in September, was designed to make those barriers visible. Participants experienced scenarios based on real-world stories: parents trying to apply for benefits without home internet, older adults missing medical updates due to confusing patient portals, or job seekers unable to upload résumés on public computers with time limits. Hosted by Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM) and moderated by KC Digital Drive, the exercise left a lasting impression, sparking discussion about what equitable access truly means in practice (watch our webinar highlighting KC Digital Drive’s simulation here).
What You’ll Learn
This webinar will take you behind the scenes of the September simulation – exploring how it worked, what participants learned, and why these lessons matter for the state of Texas and far beyond. Speakers from San Antonio Digital Connects, Family Service Association, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), and digitalLIFT will share takeaways about digital equity, community engagement, and strategies for change.
You’ll discover how empathy-driven experiences like this one can help policymakers, funders, industry leaders, digital navigators, and community members grasp the human side of the digital divide. Data tells us the scale of the problem, but lived experiences show us the urgency, and simulations bridge that gap.
Why It Matters
The digital divide isn’t just about connectivity; it’s about opportunity. When individuals are excluded from online spaces, they’re also excluded from education, healthcare, civic participation, and social connection. That’s why awareness is the first step toward change. By helping decision-makers and advocates see digital inequity through the eyes of those affected, we can better design solutions that meet real needs.
In Texas, these lessons are already taking root. Partners like Methodist Healthcare Ministries and local digital navigator networks are integrating insights from the simulation into training, outreach, and policy advocacy. The goal is clear: ensure every Texan – regardless of income, location, or background – has the tools and confidence to thrive in a digital world.
