Internet safety matters now more than ever. In today’s connected world, being online isn’t optional — it’s essential. From shopping and banking to chatting with loved ones and managing health care, the internet plays a central role in our lives. But with convenience also comes risk. Without the right knowledge, people can become vulnerable to scams, fraud, identity theft, and even online harassment.
At digitalLIFT, we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe and confident online. That’s why we offer free digital skills training, helpful resources, and professional courses designed to protect and empower users of all ages, especially those who are newer to technology.
The Cost of Not Knowing
Unfortunately, the statistics are sobering. Older adults, in particular, are at high risk. According to the FBI’s 2023 Elder Fraud Report, Americans over 60 reported losses of more than $3.4 billion to internet scams last year alone, a 14% increase from 2022.
Common scams include fake tech support calls, phishing emails, romance scams, and fraudulent sweepstakes. Scammers know how to make things look real. And if you’re unsure of what to look for, it’s easy to get tricked. Furthermore, with the growth and effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI), their tools are more convincing than ever. AI can replicate a person’s voice to impersonate a loved one in distress, create realistic-looking emails from trusted institutions, or generate deepfake videos that appear shockingly real. These advanced tricks make it even harder to know what’s genuine and what’s a scam.
These problems do not only affect older adults. A Pew Research Center report found that roughly four-in-ten Americans have experienced some form of online harassment, including identity theft, doxing, or financial scams. No one is immune — and that’s why education is key.
What You Can Do to Stay Safe
Internet safety doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, just a few good habits can go a long way. Here are a few quick tips to remember:
- Never click on suspicious links in texts or emails.
- Use strong, unique passwords for each account—and consider using a password manager.
- Keep your software updated.
- Double-check sources before sharing news or giving out information.
- Set social media profiles to private and review your privacy settings regularly.
